About

Though Amsterdam is not traditionally known as one of Europe’s major film capitals, we were surprised and delighted to find this city has an outstanding independent film culture. Amsterdam boasts at least 13 independent cinemas, numerous film festivals and outdoor showings in the summer, as well as questionably legal screenings in the many squats throughout the city.

We are Alex and Julia, two cinephile expats living in Amsterdam, and this blogs records our exploration of this Cineville. There will be movie reviews, impressions of the various cinemas and screens, and general anecdotes about movie-going in Amsterdam.

Our reviews will follow the Roger Ebert Star System (out of a maximum of 4). Since Amsterdam’s cinemas do a great job of programming classic and lesser known films as well as new releases, we will review films both old and new.

Reviews authored by “amsterdamfilm” are collaborative efforts between the two of us, though one of us may have had more input on this or that review. Reviews written by one of us without significant contribution from the other are posted under the respective author’s name.
